The P38 Lightning – times two!

Two P-38 Lightnings flying at the Chino Planes of Fame airshow 2013.

There were over 10,000 of these aircraft built and now there are 5 remaining flying P-38′s in the world, all at the Chino Planes of Fame airshow this year. Called the fork tailed devil by German pilots. The P-38 was Lockheed’s first Military Aircraft and opened the door for Lockheed to build many successful Military projects.

These two set themselves up for the perfect photo op flying right in front of me at Chino, I love the way the sunlight reflects off of the lower and aft wings, all I did was make the click.

P-51 Kimberly Kaye Flyin at Chino Air Show 2013

The incredibly beautiful P-51 Mustang Kimberly Kaye in flight at the Planes of Fame Chino Airshow 2013.  The Planes of Fame team sets this airshow up for amazing banana passes in front of the audience.  I picked the apex of the turning point where the planes are banked and at their closest.  Shooting the D4 with 70-200mm and 2X telextender allowed me to get in nice and tight once in focus I pressed the shutter release and let it rip in continuous fast mode.  Pick the best and sharpest image, add some NIK Color Efex Pro Detailer.

The polished aluminum and yellow/black paint on the cowl and spinner make this a plane than looks amazing, keeping the shutter speed low makes the prop blur and gives it a sense of movement.N451TB " Kimberly Kaye P51 Mustang

Which path would you take?

American Flags on the Field of Honor  exhibit they create at the Castaways Park in Newport Beach, California. This exhibit honors the service men and women of the US.  Each flag has the name of the person serving and some have the name of the person sponsoring that flag. Check it out as this is a very cool thing to see.  So, which path would you take, left of right?

Stairway to Heaven

The Trail Along Tenaya Creek to Mirror Lake in Yosemite Valley

Yosemite’s Mirror Lake Trail one of the easier walks in the Valley. Even though it’s easy, there’s great scenery along the trail.  It’s easy to visualize when you are in the valley, this one seemed to say Stairway to Heaven….stairs on the rail by tenaya creek

The Newport Wedge

Living near the beach I’m always checking out the surf report. This week we had a nice swell come through for a few days with 7-8 foot waves. Great fun for the body boarders at the Newport Wedge.

Yosemite Falls

The tallest waterfall in North America is Yosemite Falls, located a very easy walk from the Yosemite Lodge the Falls are a must to see and photograph.  This is one of my favorite places to photograph in the valley and it never ceases to be a great subject.  It’s absolute must place to visit and photograph.  It’s so easy to get to and access is easy all the way to the falls.

This shot taken on the paved path leading from to Yosemite Lodge to the base of the Yosemite Falls – at night.  If it wasn’t cloudy the evening I took this it would have a cobalt blue sky with stars, even with the clouds a time exposure comes out pretty cool giving the image an artsy feel.

I like to shoot the Falls at Sunrise, as the sun lights up the granite walls to the left of the Falls it reflects and plays across the Falls and the rocks creating reflections and shadows.  If you have a zoom get in close and tight to get some great shots of the rocks and shadows.

The best camera is the one you have with you and this image of the rainbow at the Falls shot mid morning is another mood the Falls shows.  Shot with an iPhone it shows that the best camera is the one you have on you so don’t be shy about shooting.

No Waves to Photograph so, Shoot the Shorebirds

It’s officially South Swell Big Surf season here in the OC, we had a nice swell come through last week with nice 6′ high waves, this week has another smaller swell come though so I took off to shoot the last day of the swell.  I went to the Newport Wedge a great local spot that pumps well with a South Swell and caught some quick clicks of a few small waves, like below.  I like to shoot from the West shooting into the tube of the wave but, gotta have waves to do this…

With one lone body boarder in the water I was patient and caught this image of him slipping and sliding having fun.

As the swell was dying down I did have some fun shooting the shore birds catching their antics as they feed and run from the water.  This bunch heard that the surf was up and as any good surfer, they decided to hang out together and check out the waves before venturing out….

The two characters were pretty fun to watch, one going one way, the other heading the other way a quick click.
